Step Up Project

Step Up Project

Step Up Pattern created by a student

We have just started a new programme with young people.  We have 16 young people from Sidney Stringer Academy coming to us for twelve sessions.

The aim of this programme, in line with the aims of our project, is to bring together the diverse communities that live in the area in order to build a strong and cohesive community. Click here to read more.

Young people attending this programme will increase their understanding of their own and each other's communities; improve their confidence in engaging with people of different communities to themselves; develop skills in engaging with, challenging and learning from people of other cultural and faith backgrounds; and increase their own sense of engagement with and stake in the wider communities around them locally and in the wider society.

Step Up students playing Chutes and Balls. A game that inspires teamwork.

Our aim is that they will develop leadership skills, and the confidence that they can make a difference to others. They will have the experience of a safe and welcoming space for discussion of some of the difficulties that confront them personally and their communities. They will clarify and develop their personal goals for their lives and the lives of those around them. They will also have concrete experience of exercising real influence and leadership.

We have already had the first day of the step up program and Fatima says that it got off to an excellent start. The theme was around ourslelves and family, as well as getting to know each other. She thought it was great working with lively, intresting and enthusiatic group of young people. The day had a good mix of games, team building, listening, talking exercises and having fun! The group also made badges, hand prints and identity flowers which they got to personalise. Looking forward to Day 2 :)
