Here is a test to find out whether your mission in life is complete. If you're alive, it isn't.
So yesterday (March 8th) we celebrated the 100th year of International Women's Day. Before coming to work at this project I didn't know much about it and what a special and important day it is. So I would like to share with you a little of what I have learnt.
International Women's Day first started as campaigning for voting rights and equal pay. This was started by Clara Zetkin (Leader of the Women's Office for the social democratic party in Germany) in 1911 to campaign against women's oppression and inequality.
It is now a day to recognise women's achievements past and present and inspire women worldwide. Although things have come a long way from 1911, it is sad to say that women have still not gained true equality be that in politics, pay or education. That being said there are so many amazing women out there who are doing amazing things both in their work life, home life and community. In my time at this project I have been a witness to some of these amazing women, and to some of the amazing hurdles they have overcome.
To celebrate this we had a party at our project and what a party it was. The whole event was a hive of activity with women talking, dancing, having mendhi, eating delicious food and also having a lovely Indian Head Massage courtesy of Kate from Hillz FM. It was so nice to see lots of different women coming together to share their stories from all the different countries they have links.
International Women's Day was a lot of preparation and so much hard work was put in by Fatima to bring it all together. It was all so worth it to celebrate International Day with my sisters of the world especially the ladies from Hillfields and Foleshill!!
