Music at 6 Paul Stacey

A woman helps a girl with a trumpetOn Wednesday 10th November, we hosted the first inter-cultural music event we've run for a long time - too long!

We had saxophone, trumpet, djembe, keyboardsPeople playing instruments, bass, guitar, tambourine, voices, violin and a veena. There was unaccompanied singing, reggae, blues, jazz, South Indian classical and East African music, among others - and many cross-fertilisations and fusions, as always. More from participants (and more pictures) below ...

People playing music

Two women, playing saxophone and veena

From Pooja:

I liked that everyone could get involved at some point, and that when people were beginning to get bored they could go and do something else. The range of activities was good. Music, dancing, food, chatting, singing and listening

I liked that we had a range of instruments too. It was cool to see the south Indian instrument in the office.

Man with djembeI think we tried to play different types of music which kept people entertained. The most successful bit I think was when we were all in the main room and people were really getting into the music. It created an atmosphere that everyone was enjoying but then we had to move into the kitchen and people who wanted to came along moved too.

When Cyprian was singing it was also great fun getting everyone involved. I think that is the main thing. That everyone has fun and learns something new that they had never known before.

Preparing to play together

From Uzma:

The tea with foleshillfields music fusion was brrrrilliiiant! Had a fantastic time listening to the rich and inspiring music played by people from diverse backgrounds. The music truly reflected the cultural background they all came from. Food was tasty!.... And most of all enjoyed the bollywood dancing and the singin...g session towards the end! Shake your hips and let your back bone slip!!

Riina with her South Asian stringed instrument

Many thanks to the Performing Arts Service for loan of a trumpet, and to Alan Sprung, Dave Barrett and Sidney Stringer for loan of other musical instruments and equipment!

The Music Event (Reena and the Veena) lol

It was incredible, especially when everyone got involved in singing and playing various instruments.

The food was delicious as always, thanks again for those lovely samosas! This was my first experience playing veenai in front of many people, so I was very stressed at the beggining. Playing veenai with Pooja's saxo was very different and exciting. I think that's what music is for, getting everyone involved and sharing the joy amongst other. Had a really great time, thanks again!
