Caribbeans & Africans Event No. 4

People talkingThe latest in a series of events bringing African people together with African Caribbean people was held on Wednesday 16 February 2011, at the West Indian Centre. Many people who had attended previous events were present, and the evening was lively with lots of interesting debate and discussions. Click here to read more.

Early in the evening we ran short two-minute chats in pairs talking about treasured parts of our respective heritages such as favourite foods, favourite style of music, inspirational leaders and what does being black mean to you. Later on we had a longer small group session where people took turns talking about how racism has affected their lives. The feedback session generated further interesting and lively debates where people had to be steered away from in depth discussion about 'The Big Society'.

Meanwhile, a small group of people not of African descent met separately to talk about playing a useful "ally" role, and (just as importantly) to make sure the food arrived upstairs on time! As ever the evening ended with everyone together for food and further discussions.

The next event will take place on Wednesday 30 March 2011, 5pm to 7.30pm at the West Indian Community Centre, 159 Spon Street, CV1  3BB. We would particularly welcome the input of more African people.
